One day Mary went up to her Mother and Father and told them how some friends had told her that schools were bringing Woodwork, Metalwork, Sewing and Cooking back into the school curriculum.
“But I don’t remember them being a part of school.”, said John, Mary’s brother.
“Politicians change things according to their beliefs at the time that they are voted into power. In the past these were school subjects, and it looks like they may soon become school subjects once again, teaching children how to use their minds, hand, and abilities to built, cook and sew.” said Father.
Mother piped in with, “I agree with them bringing those subjects back. What a wonderful idea, and much fun for the children too.”
“Dad!”, said Mary, “Since we are on the subject of woodwork, did you find us another woodwork project?”
“Well, now that you mention it Mary, yes I did.” said their Father as he smiled at them. He continued, “I was looking around on the Internet and I found a page of Projects and one was poster with a wood frame. Simple to make, but very attractive, nice to put on the wall in any home. They can also be given away as presents. Want to get to it right now?”
Both Mary and John nodded their heads eagerly. And as their Father got up from his armchair the children got off their chairs and followed their Father into the lounge where he sat down at the computer, switched on the printer and chose a poster then printed it. Then he asked the children to pick an image and print that.
Each with their own image/poster they trooped out to the workshop.
“Lets get some thin strips of wood from the Junk Box”, said their Father.
John had chosen a poster of motorcycles, Mary chose a poster of a beautiful garden, and Father chose a poster of an exploded view of a car engine. We will follow John’s choice, the Motorcycles (Image 1).
“What now Dad?” said John.
“We need to measure the lengths of narrow wood so that they fit at the top and bottom of the poster, not the side. This is simple enough.” He replied to John.
Father held the wood against the bottom of the poster and measured the correct width needed for the wood.
Both Mary and John did the same. And with the wood in the vice and a hacksaw in hand the wood was cut to the correct measurements.
“Dad, why did we use a hacksaw, isn’t that supposed to be used for metal?” asked John.
“In this case the hacksaw is an excellent choice for cutting small pieces of wood, plastic, plastic pipe and such. And as you can see it does a good job, just what we needed in fact.”
Father said to the children, “When we work in the workshop on wood projects there are certain metalwork tools that can be useful for us in what we are doing, and if we are doing a metal project some woodwork tools may be of help. We learn these things with time and experience, and imagination.”
Mary and John were very pleased with their projects and rushed back into the house to show their mother.
In the future they will make posters for friends, church, clubs that they join, for people’s birthdays, and people will enjoy their personalized posters made just for them.
Mary and John went back out to the workshop and gave their Father a long thankful hug, which pleased their Father very much.
They all walked back into the house and Father was already working on their next project in his mind.
