When I was a boy in Huntly, I was given a slingshot and a toy man with his parachute. What I had to do to make it work was fold up the toy man’s parachute, and then put him in the slingshot, and then point the slingshot to the sky and let it go, and the little man would shoot up high in the sky. The parachute would unfold as the toy man was coming down and he would gracefully float to the ground. It was a marvel to see, and a lot of fun for a boy who loved to experiment with toys, tools and nature (gravity etc).
As a child in Huntly we made lots of our own toys, and that made the toys far more exciting because we were able to personalize them and add and take things from them to make them how we wanted them, paint them as we wished and put our own names on them, and even give some away as presents for our friends.
Today I tried a handkerchief and sewing thread and that worked but got tangled a bit.
So I decided to try a Paper Towel and Wool, and also a Keyring.
This set up worked fine, no problems at all. I held the parachute up and it floated to the ground.
In Image 3 the wool is tied (You can do it more neatly than me) to each corner of the Paper Towel, and in Image 2 all of the other ends of the wool are threaded into the Keyring.
What you can do is thread the wool ends into the keyring and then tie them all together.
Why, you ask, why the Keyring????
The Keyring is for you to experiment with, you can thread things into it, tie a toy to it, a peg, a flower, whatever, experiment, have fun.
Now, the Paper Towel.
You could possibly use a tissue as well.
The Paper Towel is stiff. And because it is that way it holds the wool, string, whatever you use, apart and they tend to tangle less.
I used the whole Paper Towel and that meant a rectangle Parachute, but you can cut yours into a more Square shape and that.
If you have a balcony, stairs, a high place you can have lots of fun with these, or possibly use a stone as weight and throw it up, I once had a parachute like that. Instead of the Keyring I used a stone, folded the parachute, threw it and on the way down the parachute unfolded and the stone floated down, but the heavier the stone the faster it will want to come down. Experiment, have fun.
