Make a Classic Children's Pirates Hat.

I have no idea when these were first being made, probably with the first newspapers.

This classic Pirates Hat goes way back and has been made by millions of children worldwide.

This project is a great introduction to folding, following instructions and having fun at the same time while gaining a hat at the end. Paper other than newspaper can be used and coloured. Probably the reason why they were often made in newspaper is that newspaper is so plentiful and that meant that after the adults were finished reading the newspaper the children could make lots of hats.

First we should fold the paper in half to find the center line as we see is being done in Image 2.

You can crease the paper lightly or mark the center at the top with a pen or pencil.
Next fold the right-side to the left as is shown in Image 3.  The vertical line is at the center.

Next we fold over the other side as is seen in Image 4.

The next thing we do is press down the creases that we have made so far.
Now we can fold up the bottom, but making sure that we leave the other side.

Image 7 shows the finished product.

If you want to, you can fold the corners as I did, and use some sticky tape to hold the hat together or staple it together if you would like. I have seen children make these hats for their toys, teddy bears, dolls and the like, and at children’s parties parents have made the hats and put goodies in them to hand out to each child.

Children also use the hats for games.

The hat can be painted, decorated, things can be hung off it like the corks they have on hats in Australia.

Fun, fun, fun, what you do with the hat is up to you .

Take care!

All the best from
