Golgotha, the name of the hill where Jesus was crucified. Its other
popular name is Calvary. The name Golgotha is from Aramaic gulgulta and
Hebrew gulgoleth, meaning "skull,".
Matthew chapter 27, verse 33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull. Mark chapter 15, verse 22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha,
which is, being
Luke chapter 23, verse 33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. John chapter 19, verse 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: One amazing theory was from Jerome who mentions a tradition that Adam was buried at Golgotha and at the Crucifixion drops of blood from Jesus fell on his skull and he came to life. This can even be seen in some early pictures of the event. Another theory is that the area has a skull like contour. The Bordeaux Pilgrim mentions it as monticulus Golgotha (A.D. 333). Mount Calvary seems to have come into use after the 5th century. |
