In the movie Edge of Tomorrow at the beginning, William Cage is an uniformed desk man, with very little courage, lots of fear, selfish and looking after number one, himself.
But due to a time-loop Cage has to go through training, issues, and scary scenes again and again and because of that he grows and grows in courage, confidence, and by the end of the movie is a mentally strong confident courageous fighter willing to take on the enemy face to face and even die if need be, a total turn around of character.
Around 2004 I was suffering anxiety, fears, dark depression, and even though I wanted to be courageous I was the opposite.
Years of struggle beating depression and anxiety, without any help from drugs and without any form of therapy, and then the intense Character Assassination I became used to being disliked, mistreated, and hardened up a lot, and then 5 years of security work, facing criminals on a few occasions, threatened on others, I became the opposite to what I used to be.
I doubt it was the intention of the writers of the movie, but maybe it was, that the movie is an example of the transformation from coward to courage, the years, the struggles, the repeated struggles until we get it right and then finally the new person, a born again soul of different character, good, and willing to do the right thing even if it is the last thing that we do.
Sergeant Rita Vrataski, The Angel of Verdun, is already a person of strong character, and she is at the beginning not impressed by Cage, but by the end of the movie for the greater good of all she is willing to die side by side with Cage to defeat the known enemy.
We discover in our lives that it is so easy being the coward, especially when the going gets tough.
We discover that we need do nothing, and the safer way is to take no risks,
and if innocent people are paying because of our cowardice well so be it, we have to look after number one in our lives don’t we?
But some people realize that looking after themselves and their well being is taking risks and if they get hurt or killed then that is still looking after ourselves, because if we walked away without doing the right thing according to our conscience and lived we could never forgive ourselves our whole life for doing nothing and allowing evil to continue.
In one of my Medieval books, they mentioned a true story, 5 Knights and their leader surrounded by a large force of troops and certain death if they fought on.
The Knights were highly regarded as very loyal and brave men.
The 5 Knights were offered a chance to walk away, free, if they handed over their charge, their friend and leader.
They declined the offer to save their lives because they just couldn’t live with their own consciences if they walked away.
They fought and they died, and they took a lot of the enemy with them.
One of the reasons that the enemy leader offered them the chance to walk away was that he knew that they would lose a lot of good men before they defeated these 5 courageous warriors and their leader.
Courage is about doing what must be done because it is the right thing to do.
The real big courageous moment in your life will not be easy, but it will never be the wrong thing to do.
It will always be the thing that you should do, were born to do, and you should not fail.
Great honourable courage leads to worthy well deserved destinies.
Cowardice never leads to great destinies, it only leads to shame, self disgust, self loathing, and the pretence that we had no other choice when we know deep down there was a far greater choice that could have been taken but we shied away from it, and now we can’t sleep nights, we need drugs, therapy, alcohol, or parties and such to get through the weeks, months and years, we suffer addictions as our own self punishment.
Courageous people lead good lives, are not afraid to stand up for what is good, right, decent and true, that is their way.
So if this is not you then now is the time to start making this you.
Start saying no to people, be defiant, be assertive, demand the right thing, demand change and be determined that you are the change in this world, in your city, town and home that you want to see others be.
Being a coward never made anyone happy, being courageous always does, and you sleep much better.
A lot of people over the last 17 years have called me a coward and other names, but never to my face, I
think that says a lot about the truth of their cowardly remarks and their own characters.
Know people by their actions, and know yourself by your own.
