Beginners Woodwork- Page 4 – You have many options.

Before we start a new job it is wise to stop and think about what it is that we want to do and then consider all the ways we know at this time to do this job, and then try to find out what is the best most efficient and safe way to do it.

I worked on a door once, and when I did the job that I did I used screws that were easily seen. It was not until later on that I discovered brad guns and that the new Brad Guns are battery operated.

The Brad Nail is barely seen and is easily punched in, puttied over and then painted over, and when that is done is is not even seen on the finished work.

Experience has taught me that there are many options to complete a job in woodwork and there are also many ways to do the same job. And this is why we should stop and consider all our options, think about what we see in our mind as the finished completed work, and then use our imagination to figure out the best way to do the job, what tools we should use and consider any safety concerns.

For a simple example, say we want to make a box and we are going to join the corners with a join where the ends just join together, see Image 1.

The two piece of wood are to make one corner of the wood box. We see them in Image 1.

The next Image shows us an option. We could drill pilot holes to guide some screws. But do we want screws to show? Hmm, what else could we do?

Image 3 - We could use nails. Is that the path that we want to take?
Image 4 Then there are coach screws.
I am using these more and more in my projects due to the strength they give to the work.
But they don’t look so neat and tidy

We could use a Brad Nail Gun (Image 5). I often use these to start my projects and hold the wood together so that I can drill and put screws in. Some people use these to finish a project. On YouTube there is a video of a man making a fence with thin Brad Nails. The idea is to shoot the Brad nails in at angles so that the wood won’t come apart.

There are other options as well, such as using glue. Or mixing it up, like glue first then Brad Nails to hold it all together.

More and more wood workers are using just glue because the glues that we can get are so strong these days, but I prefer to have more security, and if I use glue I use something else with it like nails or bolts.

You could use Joist Brackets to do the job. The idea behind this page is to let you know that there are many ways to do a jb and part of the excitement is going through your assortment of tools, glues, hardware, or going downtown and going to a hardware stores and looking at what they have and then coming home and finishing the job.

Another point is do you want the rough look for the box? If so them maybe nails will do the job.
Or will the box be inside where everyone will see it. Then it would need sanding, or planing, shaping possibly, and will you stain, paint or varnish the wood, or  use an oil to get that lovely finished touch that brings out the natural grains of the wood.

Do please note that sometimes the bolts being seen, or the nail heads, can add character and style to your swordsmanship, and that is something else to think about.

All these things to consider are what make any craft worth doing, and the end result can be used, or admired, and this just makes the job worth the effort, time and money.

Please have fun, but always consider safety first, and make sure the workshop is clean, tidy, safe and the tools are working in the way that they should. Another exciting part about any craft is all the wonderful materials you use, and the work that you can do.

All the best from
