You have many choices and like any sport you can find that you are spending hundreds of dollars a year just to be active in your chosen sport.
Cycling is one of those sports where a fashion has been cultivated and cyclists are expected to buy the accepted garb to fit in and be approved by the Cycling Community. Image 1 shows some of the big brand names.
For me I was never into fashion in any sense in any form, so when I got into cycling and I was told to shave my legs, buy very expensive super thin clothing I declined.
So if you are like me and cycling is a fun sport yet you will never go into competition you can wear more casual wear and still be fast.
Another issues for the cyclist who goes long distance is rashes and chaffing. Sweat, heat, and a constant rubbing leads to skin being highly irritated and in some cases it comes off causing some serious pain.
Females may have issues with their feminine parts causing pain and should wear specially designed clothing to avoid this.
You can also buy expensive cycling shorts with Chamois Bottoms for comfort. And you can use special creams for minimizing rubbing.
All this adds up money-wise, and the sport becomes very expensive.
If you are a casual cyclist like me, who does long distance, but is trying to keep the sport more manageable and not so expensive by going overboard to impress others, you can find alternative ways to minimize chaffing and rashes.
This is my simple setup:
Normal shorts. Simple Trunks underwear, mainly because normal short underwear the cotton seams can dig into the inner thighs causing rashes, whereas the trunks don’t have these seams in the inner thighs.
I often wear a singlet, or just a T-Shirt that I have cut the arms off.
And the normal helmet, and some sand-shoes/sneakers that cost around $200 about 10 or so years ago.
The more you cycle the more you learn and the more things that you will try to make the cycling easier, yet enjoyable.
To minimize chaffing I tried many things including the Chamois cycling shorts, the creams, and in the end I just use trunks and thick Almond Oil which I splash down there liberally.
Almond Oil is also very good as a sun block and lubricant, its cheap, and can be found in any Supermarket. This works fine for me on 20-30 km rides. If you want to go on longer rides, experiment, find out what works for you.
How I look cycling does not bother me at all. And as far as the females are concerned I get many waves and smiles just in my common clothing. So if you are a guy scared that the females won’t find you attractive in your non-fit-in-cycling-clothing, the expensive clothing will attract some women, but they probably be the type of females that are materialistically-minded.
I think that the most impressive thing to others is your dedication, your energy and your stamina. Muscles too, because you won’t get cycling muscles without some hard-out workouts.
I hope this article gives you some ideas that you may want to consider.
