The wonderful world of Math.

Homeschoolers tend to prefer a real world approach to math teaching, rather than just studying books and lessons int he classroom.

For instance math is used in the home everyday.

So once the basic math learning is done, then the next step is to incorporate math into our daily activities, for example:

  • Cooking measuring amounts of ingredients.
  • Sewing material measurements.
  • Woodwork. Measuring up projects, cutting wood out, finding dead center, making shapes like circles etc.
  • Gardening measuring out land, and dividing gardens up.
  • Shopping at the supermarket. Counting money, Using a calculator. Checking bank accounts.
  • Etc…

Counting in day to day activities teaches the child how to count and why they need to count when they have become an adult.

This means that the child wishes to learn math because it is useful, will help them out in the future and the child will feel that math is practical, worth learning.

An example of planning.

A Study Of Math Sets An Example Of Working With Grace

My Aim: I aim to teach Grace about Math Sets.

Grace has had previous study in this area but this time I want to cover more information and more importantly I want to teach Grace about Math Sets from a broad range of materials. My goal is to teach Grace about Math Sets from many different angles which will all lead to Grace having a much greater understanding of Math Sets, why we use them and how they can help Grace during her life and in real life situations. Using material from many different sources, I believe, gives the student a much greater chance of learning the subject material and retaining that information for future use. This method also keeps the student from losing concentration and interest as he or she could if the material is written by one author using the same approach throughout the written work. I believe that different approaches give more life to the learning process and help inspire the student to go forth and learn more without having to be pushed, just guided. Different authors also give different information that the other authors for some reason or another leave out. I write additional lessons and explanations to help fill in any gaps that may need teaching.

The Resources We Will Use:

My approach is to use many resources from many different sources to teach Grace Math Sets.   I have many Mathematics books which our family have brought over the years, all of which will help in this mission in some way or another. The Math Matters books are a constant resource material. I have the teachers book for New First Year Mathematics by F. Adamson & D. W. Turner, Mathematics For Form Five, It’s A Mathematical World Book 3, other books and written material and access to the internet and a good printer to print out lessons and reports if and as they are needed. I also have the math supplements and other material that I received from the many courses that I have sat during my life. All of these, combined with a knowledge of the subject and a good imagination, will give us a good course which will teach Grace about Math Sets.

Our Method:

I collect as much material as I can that will teach Grace to have a good understanding of Math Sets. Then I put these all in an order that I choose that will teach Grace step-by-step from the simple lessons right through to the harder text. I want Grace to learn gradually but with a constant effort until the lessons are finished. All through this process I keep a close eye on Graces work ensuring that she is understanding the material that I have put in front of her to study. I am always at her complete disposal so that she can ask any questions and if need be I can explain something she may not understand or give clear answers to her questions.

Evaluation:

I can watch Grace throughout this study as she goes through her lessons and since I am there to personally answer her questions I can also guide her through her work. This also gives me the great opportunity to watch and mentally evaluate Graces improvement as she studies. I explain to Grace the work that she has to do before she does it.

I can ask Grace to do written work and draw diagrams of sets using the symbols and rules that she has learnt while studying Math Sets. Another way to test her in this situation is to get her to find sets around the home, on a walk or in books, in the world – the options are limitless. This is a good way for Grace to see how sets can be used in the “real world”.

Verbally I can ask questions of Grace as she goes through her work material. This is natural for me as I did this with Tracey and Rachel over the years. As I have the advantage of a parent-teacher relationship with my student and the help of a one-on-one situation I can easily watch Graces improvement hour by hour and day by day until the project is finished. The questions that Grace asks me are also a good indication of what she has learnt and not learnt in the latest lesson that she is studying. In all work that I teach Grace she cannot go forward until she has finished the work that she is currently studying with a certain amount of success.

I usually use a software product that I wrote which can test Grace on any subject and fully record the results and then print these results out as they are needed. In this particular case I would read through the material that I have given Grace to study and make tests from this study material. These tests would be developed from the previous results of Graces previous work in this project and the current material Grace is working on. This is a step-by-step method that I use which gives me a true indication of what Grace has learnt and whether she should move on to the next level in the project or re-study the material. If Grace needs to re-study material I normally only give her the material that she needs to study and not force her to study material that she has already proven a good knowledge of.

The example I have used is a real life situation that has recently passed. We studied Math Sets recently and I felt relaxed writing of this example as it was recent and fresh in my memory. Grace enjoyed the work and found it interesting and a joy to concentrate on this subject to the extent that she was able to retain the information given to her. As you can imagine from the above paragraphs I have a good idea of Graces improvements throughout her study of Math Sets. I can watch her as she goes through the work material and I can correct her while being available for her should she need my help. This is a good system and one that works for the teacher and student alike.
