The story goes that Moses Mendelssohn, grandfather of the famous composer was not a handsome man.
Yet one day he fell in love with a young woman. She, couldn't stand the sight of him.
When she looked away or at the ground he was deeply saddened.
The young woman, Frumtje, was repulsed by his short stature and hunchback.
Finally it became time for suffering Moses to leave, so he gathered up his courage and went to visit Frumtje to take one last opportunity to speak to her.
To Moses, Frumtje was a vision of heavenly beauty.
He made a few attempts to speak to her, all to no avail. She stared at the ground rather than look at Moses.
Moses shyly asked her, "Do you believe that marriages are made in Heaven?"
"Yes", she replied while still looking down, "And do you?" she asked Moses.
"Yes, I do", Moses replied. "You see, in Heaven at the birth of each boy, God announces to him which girl he will marry. When I was born, my future bride was pointed out to me. God added,"Your wife will be humpbacked."
"Right then and there I called out.,"Oh God, a humpbacked woman would be a tragedy. Please, God, give me the hump and make her beautiful."
Then Frumtje looked up into his eyes and was stirred by some distant memory.
She reached out and gave Moses her hand and later became his loving devoted wife and he her devoted husband.
