A way to approach learning a new subject could be like using body weights. The idea should be to start with a muscle-foundation and then build on that.

Any employment, a new hobby, subject (like photography, electronics, carpentry and so on) can be complex, very involved, take a lot of study, so if we at first approach the subject with a basic understanding then we are laying down a small, yet strong, foundation of knowledge, and from then on we build on that.
