Make a Doorstop from a 2x4 Piece of Wood.

On my travels one day I came across this remarkable and yet very simple design for a doorstop.

Nails

Please note the long nails in Image 1, they act like springs of sorts, and when the door hits the wood it bends backwards and stops the door from hitting the wall.

When put in place (Image 2) the nails slip into the boards.
If needed the whole unit can be lifted out
.

I would imagine that something other than nails could be used as well, like some other steel rods.

Holes could be drilled into the 4x2. Rods of some sort of steel inserted into the wood and glued in place and then the free ends of the wood inserted between the boards on a deck.

Padding could be added to the wood so that the door wouldn’t be damaged over time, such as a rubber/plastic trim or rubber top and bottom, colourful felt or some such material of your own choosing. A simple but effective idea.

In reality any size or type of wood could be used and if you really want to be creative you can cut a shape from wood and use that and when the door is closed the shape is seen, such as a shape of a duck, cartoon character, a sign, a carving, whatever you want, varnished or painted. With the door closed it looks fashionable and tidy.

A great fun project for parent and son or daughter can do on a Saturday afternoon, as this would involve measuring, possibly shaping, sawing, sanding and painting.

A variation of this could be to lay the 4x2 horizontal and 4 nails on the side and say 4 ducks or shapes added to the front of the board. This would take the impact of the door on a wider piece of wood - just an idea.

Maybe some teenager could take up such an idea and see if there was a market for it, especially if the doorstopper's were cut, shaped, painted and so on.

School Project?

Could be used as a basic plan and then the students asked to design their own doorstopper’s vertical or horizontal, with whatever shapes, can they add something to the doorstopper that would be useful like behind it.

Maybe a row of small pot plants or something.
