Our Security car uses halogen bulbs, and I was told recently not to touch the Halogen Bulbs with my hand.
I wish that they had told me that earlier because in the past I had changed about 3 of these bulbs in various cars in the past few years and they all worked fine, but…
the theory is, is that, the oil on our hands gets on the special quartz-type glass and can cause a weak spot at that place and possibly cause the bulb to blow in the future or have a limited life span.
The bulbs are incandescent, but they have halogen gas in them and that creates a process that makes the tungsten filament last longer, and with the glow they give out they can be smaller lights physically.
The the filament is enshrouded in a smaller quartz “envelope instead of a glass bulb, inside is the halogen gas which at a high enough temperature, the evaporating tungsten combines with the halogen gas, which redeposits the tungsten onto the filament again, recycling the tungsten filament instead of it depleting as fast as a normal incandescent light bulb filament, making the Halogen Filament last longer.
Obviously the lights being smaller, bright and lasting longer make them an attractive purchase.
So please remember, if you have to change a Halogen Bulb try not to touch the glass, instead use a clean paper towel or gloves to do the job.
All the best from
