You can use putty, blue tack. I have done this often, just a small bit in the end of the screw and insert the screwdriver tip and it is enough to hold the screw until it bites into the wood.
Buy magnetized screwdrivers.
I had some of these years ago but lost them, they are a good idea, I should get some
more.
These are great for picking up screws that have fallen down in difficult places
such as in TVs., Radios, Stereos and Computers.
I have not tried this but people say:
Instead of buying new sets of magnetic tipped screwdrivers, you can magnetize your existing screwdriver using a rare earth magnet or any other large magnet. Simply brush the end of your screwdriver across the magnet a few times, and voila, you've magnetized it! The effect lasts for months or even years, and if they lose their magnetic ability, just swipe them again. - Popular mechanics.
Or you can try the Tape Method.
For the difficult jobs put the screw through the tape, tape it to the screwdriver as is seen in the image, and then screw it into the work piece.
