If the nail goes in at the edge of a piece of wood then it can split the wood.
Sometimes
we need to nail the end of some wood because we are building a box and so on.
I read this “fix” in a book about 15 or so years ago. The image above shows the hammer about to hit the Pointed End (Right Nail) of the nail, and the nail next to the sharp nail has already been made blunt.
If the sharp end of the nail is made blunt there is much less chance of the wood splitting.
