If the student gets to make his or her colour charts then it helps them understand
what the colours are and then learn how to mix colours.
They can also learn that they
can make what is called “Mud” when colours are over mixed and become a muddy mess
which has to be thrown away. Below is a simple yet effective example.
Once the child becomes familiar with the colours that they have in tubes they can then thing, “The sea, hmm, I think I will use some Deep Blue and see how that turns out.” and through trial and error the child becomes more and more confident and sued to the colours available to them and then the colour mixes that they can come up with when a colour is not available.
Also they can ask themselves questions like, does Red + Blue make Violet, Magenta or Purple and then try it out. Put up questions that they can mix and come up with the answers. Also one must explain that the item being painted on, such as paper, cardboard, wood, canvas etc makes a difference to the end-colour.
