Taken with a Grain off Salt.
Sometimes people say, “a pinch of salt” also.
Food is easily swallowed with a pinch of salt, the salt makes the food more palatable.
It means that if I tell you something that I was told, to not take it as the gospel truth, don’t interpret it literally.
The information could be unreliable.
Or a person could say of the information, to look at it with skepticism.
I always thought that it means to hear the information or read it, and then have
the attitude that it may or may not be fact, so to just be aware of that when you
read it.
Like the Hollywood so-called historical movies that are dressed up with fancy
scenes to make the real history more exciting, in other words, “It was a great movie,
very exciting, had me on the edge of my seat, but historically you should take it
with a grain of salt.” Meaning that the movie is accurate here and there, but not
to be seen as all facts, so don’t take it too seriously.
Example:
“Renee tells some big stories especially about herself, but we tend to take what she says with a grain of salt because she has quite an imagination and tends to exaggerate a lot.”
