Groundhog Day
1993
1 hour 41 minutes - Comedy, Romance.
One of my favourite movies, yet I have never been a person who likes Bill Murray movies.
A grumpy, self-centered weatherman called Phil Conner’s is forced to relive one strange day over and over again, until he gets it right.
The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsutawney in western Pennsylvania is where Phil and his crew have to go to get the info on the event and what the groundhog predicts for the weather.
Wikipedia explains Groundhog Day this way:
It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch
superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow
due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six
more weeks; but if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will
arrive early.
The first morning at the hotel Phil wakes up to a radio alarm with a message that
he is going to get tired of since he hears it repetitively from that day onwards
for a while. Starts with Sonny and Cher and their hit song “I Got You Babe.”
The fact
that thing go wrong for Phil also makes him grumpy and causes him to get angry at
others and become even more sarcastic with his icy humour. After they due their shoot,
and “Punxsutawney Phil”, the groundhog makes his prediction for 6 more weeks of Winter,
They head off to leave the town but a blizzard drives them back.
The next morning Phil is alarmed at the fact that the day is repeating, he remembers what people are saying, and that probably scares him since he does not believe in any force other than himself.
Phil goes through many stages as the day repeats.
The reason I like the movie is because Phil has to learn his lessons. In his original character state he is an egocentric person who cares only for himself, and once he finds out that this day is repeating he uses the time to get up to dishonest activities,.
But eventually he tires of it and, well you will have to see the movie.
The ending is wonderful and that makes all the trials and errors that Phil goes through
all worth it.
Worth watching on that rainy day.
