Where to get your Homeschooling resources from.

Everywhere and everything. The whole concept of Homeschooling to me was to teach my children Life Skills that they could use their entire lives. I wanted them to have coping skills, to prepare them for life, and the base of this at first was from all that I had known and that was from my own childhood schooling, but as time went by we sort of did our own lessons and curriculum and it worked out just fine.

Nature is a huge free source of material to teach children, just step out your back door and immediately you are in nature.

When each of my children was a baby I would, just about every morning, take that child outside while the other children were eating their breakfast that I had previously prepared for them, and carry the baby/toddler around the home looking at the grape vine, trees. in the grass, the dirt etc for insects. A careful examination of the average back yard is a zoo of insects doing their daily activities and once the child is shown them in action the insects become very fascinating as the child watches them. I never got tired of doing this and my reward was the wonder, fascination, smiles and laughter of the child learning about insects and life. I was teaching the child to be curious and to see what was not at first, obvious to them.

DVD’s and VHS videos can be a very cheap source of education material, especially if you are on a budget and are careful about spending.
Garage Sales/Yard Sales are a good source of material because what people are getting rid of for cheap is what you can use to teach the children such as documentaries and nature videos, films, books, pencils, rulers, and school gear.

Auction sites on the Internet are helpful.

Being a part of a Homeschooling group locally can really helps as the parents get together and share information and swap, pass on, and share materials that they have or are using. Homeschooling Groups can go on trips and that means everyone gets together for a special afternoon away somewhere as a group learning, growing, socialising in a innocent fun way.

The Internet/Google are a good source of information for studies etc.

One of the skills you gain is that you are constantly on the lookout for materials to use in upcoming Homeschooling projects. What ever you can find, old wood, paper, cardboard, what people offer you etc, all of it helps. Its not about money, it is about gaining skills and learning.

If someone gives you pre-primed perfectly cut wood then there is no need for sanding the project, painting primer, etc., and that is not good because you want wood that is not perfect, maybe even crooked, and then you teach your child how to measure, how to trim, cut, saw, plane with a hand-planer, getting on that first primer coat while explaining why a primer coat is needed.

Mentally check out your old and new friends for their skills and see if they can help out or at least offer suggestions and maybe even give you some materials to use if they work in the field that you want your children to learn.

If you include your children in furniture, car, house repairs, then the children will get life skills that they can use as adults.

For instance, if you have a hole in the hall wall then get the children together and teach them how to fix it, explaining in detail as you go what you are doing why you are doing it and always be ready for questions that they ask because they will want to get it right.

Maybe you want some steps for the back door made of wood, so you get some wood. Show the children how to measure and cut stringers, then put it all together and paint it all. They will feel loved, trusted, responsible for doing a good job, happy that they made an honest worthy contribution to the family home. This is all very good for their souls, their confidence, courage and self respect, and they feel good knowing that they have gained their own parents self respect.

If you go to a church or some group you may get help there. Once people get used to you always wanting materials they will help out.
