Ivanhoe

1982

Action Adventure Drama - 2 Hours 22 Minutes.

I found this movie on Microsoft. Based on the book written by Sir Walter Scott, this is a wonderful adventure story that starts off with a man, a Knight, travelling from the Holy Land (Crusades) to the Knights Tournament, and he helps an old man, a rich Jew, who’s daughter is the lovely Rebecca (Olivia Hussey).

The nation at this stage in history with the absence of King Richard is under the control of his brother John, a man who is not beyond dishonesty to gain the crown, and he would go as low as to kill his own brother Richard to get his won way.

Ivanhoe must take on the kings Knights at the tournament at Ashby. They are bullies and have no issues about using unfair or bully tactics as their king would to gain the day and to make themselves look good.

During the fighting when Ivanhoe is struggling a Knight appears, he is on a black charger (horse) and deals with the unruly knights who were ganging up on Ivanhoe. When the fighting is over the mysterious knight in black rides off.

Lady Rowena (Lysette Anthony) is the fair maiden, and Sam Neil in the part of knight Brian de Bois-Guilbert, a rather sarcastic, prideful bully.

When Ivanhoe does well the crowd cheers, they have a hero, someone to cheer for. But when Ivanhoe falls from his wounds the people look the other way and none will help him.

Thankfully Rebecca talks her father into helping Ivanhoe recover from his wounds, while the egotistical Brian de Bois-Guilbert makes an oath to kill Wilfred of Ivanhoe (Anthony Andrews).

Sounds a tad rather too realistic, when you are up everyone loves you, but when you fall they don’t want to know you.

My round up is that this is a good movie of old times, of honour, chivalry, doing the right thing for the right reason, and having a reason to live, and wanting to stand up and fight for the fallen while protecting the poor and weak from bullies.

They were brutal times, but here and there were good solid people of faith, compassion, who would do the right thing and be a shining example for others to learn from and repeat as they found pleasure in giving, of helping , of what is innocent and good, and not taking any public recognition for their work because the desire is to give and take nothing in return for one’s good deeds.

I can never get enough of good movies that share a message of love good motives, and honour for the greater good of all.

While evil will always exist upon the planet, be good and you will have done the world a blessing and made the world a far better place than it was before you die.
