A Jack in the Box.

This is a simple yet fun children's project that can be put into a small box and when the box is opened the “Jack”, the face within, will jump out and hopefully surprise someone.

Take a piece of paper, and a ruler, and then rule
a line the width of the ruler - you can experiment with widths if you like.
Cut into strips - for smaller strips try 2 ½ cm/1 inch.
Put one end over the other and then fold.
Fold this,
over this.
Like This all the way until no paper is left.

You can fold the bit left over, or use sticky tape to tape it down top and bottom.

When folding these I try not to press down too far so that the paper retains its bend and springiness.

You can use printed smiley faces, printed real people’s faces, or just draw some as I did.

And there you have it. Glue the bottom to a square of cardboard for stability, and possibly even make your own box for this to fit in.
You can now put them in a box each, or just leave them as they are for fun.
Test their springiness.
