In the video above you can see my son Jimmy using some electrical equipment to create a circuit, turn it on, see that it works and then remove a lightbulb to break the circuit.
I highly recommend that you get your children this sort of apparatus to safely complete their electrical experiments.
Often with these kits the child also get a book of electronic experiments with explanations and diagrams included. This is real life stuff. If the circuit is broken or connected wrong, it simply won’t work. No grey areas, its back and white, and a good lesson about life as well.
You can see in the video how pleased Jimmy is at the completion of his efforts to see his creation working.
This is a fun way to learn a complicated subject at a young age and enjoy it while taking in the information. Comprehension is very important.
After I explained to Jimmy the basics, the safety, he did the experiments, and then made his own experiments up as well. Lots of educational creative fun.
One of the reasons that we get our children to have a go at many subjects is that they can pick and choose from some basic experiments what they want in life, what employment they may want and what hobbies to have themselves.
Below is an example of his notes. It is interesting to note that the Reed Switches that Jimmy mentions below were also used in Automatic Teller Machines up until very recently. In the future if anyone mentions Reed Switches to someone who has done such experiments they will know what is being spoken about - thats education.
All the best from
James M Sandbrook.
