Serendipity
2001
PG-13 - 1 hour 30 minutes - Comedy, Romance.
Director: Peter Chelsom.
Writer: Marc Klein.
The movie starts with a delightful upbeat Christmas song with Louis Armstrong singing, Cool Yule.
An excellent romantic movie staring John Cusack as Jonathan Trager, and Kate Beckinsale as Sara Thomas.
They meet while Christmas shopping at Bloomingdale's while they attempt to buy the same pair of black gloves. It all works out that they end up enjoying some time together that evening, memorable good times, and Jonathan is ever so keen to keep the romance going, even though the two are already involved with other people.
Sara introduces Jonathan to the meaning of the word Serendipity, and she talks about fate and destiny, leaving Jonathan confused and trying to figure out where she is coming from, and also trying to figure out why she won’t just walk off with him into the sunset.
They end up parting and going their own ways but never to forget each other.
Both leave messages for the other to find, by chance, fate, etc, on a dollar
Sara suggests that Jonathon puts his name and phone number on a $5 bill and she puts hers on the inside cover of a book that will be sold the next day. If each finds the other's item they are meant to be together, and can make contact and it is assumed to restart the romance again.
In this case the word Serendipity is ‘an unplanned fortunate discovery’.
Both try to get on with their lives, but certain “coincidences” keep happening and each time they do happen it reawakens the thoughts of the other and that special evening together. A few years go by and Jonathan is engaged to be married, Sara too ends up agreeing to marry, and that leaves them two both heading in different directions away from one another.
The trouble is, is that as much as each tries to get on without the other, each keeps being reminded of the other in certain ways and the old feelings come back and they long to meet each other just one more time to find out if there really was something special going on there, and could they have a real go at love and happiness, but of course for that to happen they need to get together first, and each having no way to contact the other.
In the most crazy ways the two find each other again with the help of their best
friends who are possibly as strange as they are. Nice movie.
This was my second viewing
of this movie and I enjoyed it as much as the first time.
