The Sword in the Stone
The Sword in the Stone is one of my favourite movies, the Disney version of course.
My favourite Disney movies are the old ones, The Sword in the Stone, Pinocchio, Snow White and so on, the classics.
This movie is about a small boy known by the name of Wort, a Wizard called Merlin and his grumpy Owl who goes by the name of Archimedes, and the plot is Merlin helping Wort to find his place in life.
Wart is a squire, a young lad acting as an attendant to a knight called Sir Kay, with possibly the small hope of becoming a knight himself. Sir Kay is the son of Sir Ector, a rather round loud prideful man himself, always complaining and giving orders to others.
Merlin, because he can use Magic, gives young Wart lessons on life and gets him into all sorts of trouble, fun and Merlin has to answer many questions within the grumbling ears of Archimedes.
There are many adventures, many lessons for Wart, much learning, and challenges, while a generous does of humour adds to their adventures such as a wolf trying to get a taste of Wart, the crumbly room in the tower for Merlin and Archimedes, wart trying to be a fish and so on, lots of good innocent humour.
Oh, I forgot to mention that this is a cartoon, also that this movie is fit for the whole family.
The these is old, about King Arthur, the legend of the Sword in the Stone and those who try to pull it out.
“Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born of all England. Then the people marvelled, and told it to the Archbishop. I command, said the Archbishop, that ye keep you within your church and pray unto God still, that no man touch the sword till the high mass be all done. So when all masses were done all the lords went to behold the stone and the sword. And when they saw the scripture some assayed, such as would have been king. But none might stir the sword nor move it. He is not here, said the Archbishop, that shall achieve the sword, but doubt not God will make him known.”
- Sir Thomas Mallory, King Arthur And His Knights.
As I said, one of my favourites, I must have watched this over a hundred times because my children would watch it over and over again and I would sit on the couch/sofa with them laughing and enjoying the movie.
Good, fun, innocent adventures, and honour, something I would imagine for everyone should they be so inclined to enjoy watch Wart trying to fit in to society as a squire, while Merlin is trying to make a leader out of Wart without Wart really figuring it out. Great movie!
