That Thing You Do! - The Wonders!
A look into the life of rock stars, and the group in the year 1960s, made in 1996.
Written and directed, and starring Tom Hanks, the first movie he directed, and its a good effort too.
Starts of with us being introduced to the drummer, Guy Patterson, who works for his dad, probably for free like his sister, and how he likes to play drums in his spare time. Clearly he has talent. Guy looks like Tom Hanks, and I thought that they could have used that look to make Guy a relation of Tom Hanks character, Mr White.
In fact Tom nearly didn't take Tom Everett Scott (Guy) because he looked too much
like Tom Hanks, but Tom Hanks wife thought he would be good for the part, so on second
thought Tom Hanks hired Tom Everett Scott , and that was a good idea. I thought that
his natural playing style really makes the group look like an authentic band trying
to make it big.
The group’s original drummer breaks his arm and the other band members
ask Guy to sit in for him on this slow ballad called That Thing You do at a Talent
Show. Guy agree’s, but on the night he boosts the tempo and gives it some more life
and lifts the ballad into a healthy sounding upbeat song that the fans love and can
dance with the new beat.
Because of Guys upbeat drumming and the rest of the band speeding up the song they win the talent show in style and then get a gig in a restaurant, Villapiano's, pizza place, and they discover that they can make money doing so.
They get a manager who gets them radio air time, and from there find stardom in Mr. White (Tom Hanks) as their new manager, a rep for Playtone Records.
I really like the way that Faye is naturally part of the group and no one complains, she is just accepted and she fills in where needed, she also supplies Mr White with information about the groups private lives.
The song, That Thing You do , peaked at 21 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, so thats not bad. Its a very catchy song and easy to sing to, probably the reason so many people like it. There is a really exciting part when Faye hears the song on the radio for the first time and goes crazy with excitement running down the street screaming, yelling, and just being really excited as the other band members are when they all meet at Guy’s parents appliance store.
Some bad language. For those interested in a comedy that is about rock and rock that has a few sad and serious parts this is a nice movie. The rest of the movie is about their relationships and the rise and fall of the band.
After you have watched the movie you can watch the making of the movie.
I like watching how they make records, movies, etc, its all about imagination, art, style, newly invented style, whats cool, not so cool, and what we can make cool
All the best from
