This is the story of Ben and Mary Tucker, left on the doorstep of Jed and Jenny Tucker,
“The Tucker Twins!”
Ben and Mary are twins, they had blond hair and blue eyes.
Join us now and read about their fight to find truth and justice.
It was a nice summers day, the sun was shining and all was well on the farm of Mr and Mrs Tucker.
At least until a surprise package was left on the doorstep of the Tuckers farm house.
One boy, one girl, they were twins.
Mr Jed Tucker opened the door to go out and milk ol' Bess the family cow when he noticed of old large box on the doorstep, in the box he could see two cute faces peeking out of the blankets. They looked warm and cosy wrapped up like that. He dropped the empty milking pail that he was holding and declared "Ma, look see here", "Children in a box", he then noticed that the names Ben and Mary were written on the box above the children's heads and he thought that these must be their names.
The babies were waking up at the sound of the bucket hitting the floor, they stirred and cooed in the most cutest baby way, and what made it cuter was that they made the same sounds at the same time together.
Mrs Tucker's first name was Jenny but Jed Tucker always called her effectionatly "Ma", she gathered up her skirt and ran to Mr Tuckers side and stared. Tears gathered in her eyes at the sight of the two babies in the box and she smiled. Jenny Tucker had a heart of gold and she had a special soft spot for children, she was an expert on bringing up babies and she always made it her business to help young mothers learn the art of bringing up children. It made her proud to help a child grow up, she felt that she was helping guide them into strong loving human beings.
"Those poor dears, they must be only six months old, they are lovely" said Mrs Tucker, "Who could have left them here"? She then ordered Mr Tucker to "Bring them little darlins inside before they both get a cold".
Mr Tucker picked up the heavy box carefully trying not to knock the babies around to much.
Mrs Tucker took a baby out of the box and gleamed with love and affection.
Mrs Tucker said, "Children from heaven".
Mr Tucker wasn't so sure that the children were meant to be there but he didn't put up much of a fight, he thought they were adorable and he was mighty lonely out there on the farm these days, two young'uns sure would be good company doing the farm chores with him. He missed his children dearly and he was always very happy when they visited and he got to see and play with his grandchildren. Mr Tucker was a kind hearted, hard working man who never really made much money but he was very happy with what he and as long as he had some tobacco for his pipe and he had his wife he was in general very happy.
"Ma, I suggest that we turn them in when we go to town next", knowing full well that would be at least six months away. Ma Tucker agreed knowing that she now had six months to convince Mr Tucker to keep the little darlings, she didn't think that the task would be hard as she saw the look of affection in Jeds eyes. Mrs Tucker was a strong hard working lady who didn't mince words. If you got on the wrong side of her watch out, but she had a heart of gold and was a very fair person and Mr Tucker loved her dearly and that's what mattered the most to Mrs Tucker.
The Tuckers only go into town once every six months because town is many miles away so they decide to keep the children until then. Mrs Tucker falls madly in love with them and refuses to give them up to the authorities when the six months is up. So the Tuckers decide to keep the children for another six months and the years roll on and on...
As the years went by the children were well looked after and Mr and Mrs Tucker treated them as their own. Time passed and life was very simple and reasonably uneventful until the children reached the age of eight, they are both blond with bright blue sparkling eyes and fit and healthy. They keep each other company and they adore each other.
They have many adventures on the ranch with each other helping feed the animals and helping Mr and Mrs Tucker do different chores, it was an exciting and wonderful life for two young children.
Sadly it was not to continue...
Ben woke early and dragged himself out of bed one Monday morning. He was always the first to wake up in the mornings mainly because of his chores which were very important and he always felt good and proud to be such an important member of the family, without Ben Mr Tuckers life would be a lot harder. After he washed himself and got dressed he opened his bedroom door and headed towards the kitchen. He stopped at the hall mirror and looked at himself, for an eight year old he was well built and strong, proud to be a member of the Tucker family and confident that he could handle any situation as it came up.
His clothes were not fancy by any means but they were good quality and lasted a long time which was what he needed on the farm. Ben flicked a tuft of blond hair off his forehead with his hand, "Darn those curls" he thought, "Always getting in the way", he smiled when he remembered how Mrs Tucker loved them and how she was always kidding him because she said that he looked cute in curls, and as you and I know boys hate looking cute.
Ben heard a noise and he new it was Mary his twin sister in her bedroom getting ready to go to the kitchen for breakfast, he hurried on. Ben smiled whenever he thought of Mary, they were very close and they spent a lot of time together. even though she was Ben's twin she was born last and was an inch shorter than Ben, but she looked so much like Ben in so many other ways, she had many curls and loved them not like Ben he was always trying to cut his off.
Mary thought "I must beat Ben to the kitchen this morning" as she hurried down the hall with one arm in her shirt sleeve and struggling to get the other arm in the other shirt sleeve in her rush to beat her brother. She burst through the kitchen door and she gasped as she saw Ben sitting at the kitchen table looking confident and with a large grin on his face.
"Up late again sis"? enquired Ben cheekily.
Mary scowled at Ben and said "Well, well look who is out of bed first again" and then she changed the subject and said "Well what's for breakfast dear brother Ben"?
Ben jumped up from his chair and ran for the outside door saying "Sorry sis, I have chores to do, you had better brush your hair before Mrs Tucker sees you" and he ran away outside.
Mary was a tom boy and she always thought of herself as a boy, she was always forgetting those simple things that girls take such pride in like brushing her hair, cleaning under her nails and being tidy in general. She liked to wear jeans and a shirt on the farm.
She was Ben equal in most ways, except that Ben was a bit stronger than her, it was noticeable these days and Mary wished that she was able to keep up with Ben in that way.
Ben did more outside chores than Mary and Mrs Tucker kept it that way, she believed that a young girl should be learning how to cook and sew and learn woman's work.
Mary was by no means a woman rights type of girl, she just loved the rivalry that she had with Ben and always wanted to keep up with him because she adored him and loved him so much.
Mary walked to the door and opened it, she looked around the farm and breathed in all that wonderful fresh clean country air, she loved this place and never wanted to leave the farm. For a while she was lost in thought as she looked at all the gifts that nature had given them like trees, grass, flowers then her gaze dropped to the ground and she saw an odd bit of metal glimmering in the morning sunlight, she leapt outside and picked it up.
"Hmm" she thought as she studied the piece of shiny metal", I may be able to use this in the future" and she stuffed it in her pocket. Mary was the Magpie in the family, in other words she loved to collect junk, not big stuff but little things that she found around the farm, like nails, bits of string, wool, pieces wood, nuts and bolts, and hoard them in her backpack or in her room for a rainy day in just case they may come in handy. She then went back inside to prepare breakfast.
Mr and Mrs Tucker were up by then and Mary helped Mrs Tucker make breakfast.
Mr Tucker and Ben came back about an hour later looking hungry and happy.
"Ben that cow in the south paddock might be sick, you know the one that had the limp last week" said Mr Tucker removing his farm boots at the doorway. Ben nodded his head in agreement as he removed his own boots. He had seen the cow as well while doing his chores that morning, Ben hoped that it wouldn't have to be 'put down' because they didn't have many cows and they wouldn't be able to get anymore for a while yet. Things on the farm hadn't been good for the last few years and things were just starting to get better.
