Mary stared and bit her lip to stop herself from replying, she new that she had pushed Red too far.

All was silent while everyone was trying to figure out a way out of the situation that they were in, except Red of course he was very happy, at last he was going to be filthy rich, he thought.

No more petty thieving of the poor folk, finally he would be paid back what he deserved for all his hard work. And if those fools in the gang think he is going to share the money with them, they are in for a surprise. He laughed out loud.

As if it was prearranged the rest of the gang stepped out of the bushes behind Jake and Red, everyone heard the hammers of rifles being cocked. It looked bad for the twins and Dr Jones. With the whole gang helping Red how could he lose. Dr Jones's hand was creeping to his long hunting knife that was tied around his waist, he was going to protect these children even if it meant that he would pay with his life.

"Drop the gun", said one of the ruffians.

"What", said Red in a surprised voice.

"Drop the gun Red, we have had enough" said one of his crew, "Jake has always been a good friend and he saved my life last year in Texas, Jake and I came to join your gang as friends and we will leave together as friends, we all like Jake and if he has an inheritance then good on him, he can get away from this cheap gang and have a real life, I said drop the gun, I mean it Red".

"Don't be a fool George, think of the money. Forget Jake, he's nothing", said a furious Red.

"Sorry Red, you're time is up as leader of this gang", said George sternly.

"What's the matter boys, haven't I always treated you fairly", said a desperate Red who like most gang leaders was worried that the day would come when someone else took over the gang leadership.

"All us boys have agreed on it Red, we decided that we had enough when you threatened Ben and Mary, heck Red they are only ten years old", and many voices could be heard mumbling in agreement. Red threw the gun to the ground with a look of total disgust on his face and turned around, he then walked slowly over towards the gang and he was led away at gun point.

Jake looked relieved and said to George and the boys, "Thanks guys” He shook their hands and patted some on the back,  “I'll be back in about an hour, I have to talk to Dr Jones and my new family", and walked towards the group of three, he sighed with relief.

"Okay Jake, see you later", said George nudging Red to get a move on.

"Sorry about that", he then held out his hand to shake Ben's hand, but Ben and Mary stood up and Mary ran to Jake and wrapped her arms around him, with Ben following close behind.

Dr Jones watched the three of them and sighed, he loved family reunions and this was a special one with an amazing twist of events added for good measure.

The four of them sat down and talked the situation over.

"Are you with us Jake, will you come with us to sort Dirk out?”, said Mary hopefully.

"I'm with you both" said a determined Jake, his view of the situation had changed once he had heard the whole story. And he was mad at Dirk. Dirk was living the high life while the rest of the family was struggling to stay alive.

"What do you want to do about Dirk, Ben and Mary"? said Jake.

"We want to go back and teach Dirk a lesson", said Ben.

"And put him in jail", added Mary determined to right the wrongs that had been placed on her, Ben and Jake.

"Hold on you three, lets think it over a bit more and come up with some kind of plan, taking Dirk out won't be easy by any means. From what I have heard he is a professional and knows what he is doing", said Dr Jones.

"Dirk is a hard stubborn man and Sheza sounds like trouble as well, I haven't met her but I remember people talking about her when she was in the Dick Wellings gang, she's good looking and mean as well, maybe we should go back to the ranch and have a look first and see what the situation is", said Jake.

"That sounds like a good idea, we have never seen the ranch and Jake you haven't seen it in years, things have changed and we want to make sure that we get this right the first time", said Ben.

"You will come with us, won't you Dr Jones", asked Mary half pleading.

"I'm not sure, people are depending on me making the rounds, I missed this area last year because I broke my left leg after my wagon hit a rock and I was thrown out and my leg landed on a boulder, it took ages for my leg to heal", said Dr Jones.

"So that's what happened to you, we were so worried", said Ben and Mary together.

"I will think about going with you seriously", said Dr Jones, "I suppose the citizens around here can wait a little longer without it being too much hassle".

"Maybe we could see if we can find that Will that Daddy left", said Mary, "Its got to be there somewhere".

"If it exists", said Jake, "Remember there is no proof that it was ever written. Still knowing Dad he may just have written a new Will before he died, he was a careful man".

"We move out this afternoon, lets get some rest and then we will be on our way", said Ben.

"I had better go back to see the gang and tell them that I am leaving, I will see you all in about two hours time", said Jake and he got up and walked to where Red and the gang disappeared to get his horse.

Ben and Mary walked over to a tree at the edge of the campsite to sleep in the shade, they were grateful to get a couple of hours sleep before they headed of to the Worthington ranch. Dr Jones sat there thinking for a few minutes and then he headed for another tree to rest under, his mind deep in thought.

About two hours later Jake led his horse into camp and said, "Hello all, wake up".

Dr Jones, Mary and Ben all stirred and slowly got up from the ground.

"Hi Jake", said Ben and Mary together.

"Good to see you Jake", said Dr Jones.

"Lets pack up and get going, I am keen to get started folks", said Jake, enjoying the fact that he had a little brother and sister. "Are you coming Dr Jones, we sure could use your help on a dangerous mission like this"?

"I thought about it and I think the folks around here can get along without me for a while longer", smiled the ever adventurous Dr Jones.

"Great", exclaimed the twins. Pleased that their friend was coming along. "Lets pack up camp".

A few days later they arrived in Jacksonville and Ben and Mary went straight to Mr and Mrs Weatherbee's home and knocked on the door. It was a Saturday afternoon and Mr Weatherbee was sure to be home.

Mrs Weatherbee opened the door and stared in shock at the twins who were looking at her guiltily.
Mrs Weatherbee gasped, "But, but we thought you two were dead"!

"Please let us in Mrs Weatherbee and we will explain", said Mary.

Mrs Weatherbee stepped aside and announced the twins to Mr Weatherbee, who was just as surprised to see them. Just then Dr Jones and Jake came walking down the street and Mrs Weatherbee said to Dr Jones, "We thought you were dead as well Dr Jones, and who is this young man" ?

Dr Jones smiled and walked passed Mrs Weatherbee with Jake and they all were now inside explaining what really happened to the Weatherbee's.

After the explanations had been made Mrs Weatherbee said, "You could have told us children, we would have helped you".

"We couldn't be sure of you doing what we wanted, you could have given us to the investigator because that was what the law wanted", We had to make sure we were not going to be followed", said Ben.

"We are terribly sorry for hurting you both like that, but as far as we could see at the time it was the only thing that we could do", said a sad faced Mary.

That afternoon the twins went for a walk to the horse stables to see Jessy, they were avoiding town because they knew there would be a fuss made if the were seen.

Inside the stable they were talking to Jessy and patting her when a voice said in a authoritative voice, "Hello Ben and Mary Worthington".

Ben and Mary spun around and there was the inspector Bill Rawlings with a big satisfied grin on his face. Ben and Mary stared not sure what to do.

"So you faked your deaths did you, well Dirk will be pleased to see the surprise I have for him, I will get a big pay out for this job", smiled Bill thinking that this case was wrapped up and ready to send. Just then Bill felt a tap on his left shoulder, he spun around and was face to face with a young man of about eighteen who looked a lot like Dirk Worthington and for a few seconds he wasn't sure what to say.

"Leave my brother and sister alone", said Jake.

Bill was amazed at his good luck and he was already calculating how much money he would get off Dirk for the three of them when Jake punched Bill on the nose. Bill stared, blood trickled out of his nose and then he collapsed on the floor.

Ben and Mary ran to Jake and cuddled him.

"Thanks Jake", they said.
